“Momentum” – Painted live at Gothic Arches [a 19th Century Gothic Cathedral] in Saint John, New Brunswick. Eight hour painting session during this event on a 36x36x2″ canvas.
This was my first live painting at a rave, and the largest canvas I’ve ever attempted live.
This work glows under black light. I painted it under UV light so the conditions were perfect for applying a mix of regular and neon acrylic paints. You see something different when the normal lights are on compared to when it’s just under black lighting. [perhaps I will visit the owner of this work at some point to get a good picture of it under proper UV lighting.]
I painted the movements of the crowd, and tried to give a sense for the size of the cathedral itself. Flooring has been laid over top of the pews on the main floor where sermons were once held. Now it’s where the people dance. Somewhere below the DJ decks and mixers is where the altar would have been.
I’m always particularly interested in the lighting conditions when I paint at an event, and this weekend was no exception.
I can’t wait to paint another party like this. I want to paint more events in general. Any event with people dancing is a wonderful opportunity to capture the movements of the crowd… the general vibe of the night itself. I want to paint more DJs.
The thing about momentum is… once you get started, you don’t stop.
Here’s the lineup of DJs we were treated to Saturday night during Momentum, as taken from their Facebook event posting.:

If you missed this event, I’ll let you know the next time I decide to paint a rave… or whatever else events I end up painting.
Always in motion… now gaining momentum…
How the painting looks under black light alternating with how it looks under normal light. Can you feel the party?
