“Word Iz Bond” – Acrylic on stretched canvas. Live painting session in 2.5 hrs, 18×14″
I was invited to a spoken word night at Ginger’s Tavern last night.
I am impressed by how good a turnout they have. Word Iz Bond meets regularly. I want to go back again to paint the atmosphere again!
The lighting in the audience was very dim. Perhaps the artist salons in the 20s dealt with the same levels of low light, gathering together to recite poetry in twilight, painting their subculture of the time.
I painted the movements of the spoken word artists as they each went up on stage. Each person was prompted to go up with a loud resounding “SPEAK!” They stood in front of a black drape on stage, next to a red brick wall and on either side sat large speakers.
Ian sat across from me and we put back a couple beers while I painted. I held a candle close to the canvas to see what I was creating.
The work was already sold thirty minutes into starting the creation! I felt extremely welcome at the event and plan to return to paint more events, live! Thanks again to Joi N. Payne for inviting me!
