“Parkinson Society Maritime Region” – Live painting in 3.5 hrs on 70×90 cm stretched canvas using acrylics. May 20th, 2010
I had the pleasure of live painting the annual Parkinson Society Maritime Region gala event at the Delta Halifax last Thursday. The dinner honoured Dr. George Turnbull, a man who has passionately worked to help those with Parkinson’s and established the maritime chapter of this society.
There were a variety of works up on the auction block by various well established Nova Scotia artists. My painting at/of this event auctioned for $575, with 80% of the proceeds going to the cause (as per my fundraiser usual).
The photo of the painting graciously provided by Paul Adams of Adams Photography Service. (He came to my rescue when my camera broke by taking pictures of the painting for me. Cheers, Paul!)

This was the ten year anniversary for Dress for Success, an organization that helps women in need by giving them a nice suit and support to enter the workforce and become independent. (See flyer here.)
This piece auctioned off for $625, with 80% supporting the cause, as per my usual.
I have never painted in Pier 21 before. It’s a large venue space that sits right on the Halifax harbor.
The band pictured on the stage is Tom Collins. There were a range of speakers at the podium and I attempted to capture elements of each one, including the wonderful, energetic host, Barb Stegemann.
There was a fashion show with models parading across the stage and down around the banquet tables to near where I was painting. I was set up at the back of the room near the main doors where everyone was entering to seat themselves for tea and cakes, or a glass of wine. Aside from jewelry and clothing and art for sale, you could also talk to a psychic (and all proceeds from the psychics went to Dress For Success. “What an unusual fundraising activity!” says the live painter.)

I am pleased to announce I will be live painting at the Dress for Success Tea Party at Pier 21 on Sunday, April 18th! This event – described as a mix between a high end fashion show and a tea party, should be fun to paint! As per my usual at fund raisers, I will create a work of art live at the event which will then be auctioned off in support of the cause, Dress for Success.
This is your next opportunity to see me in action, and perhaps own one of my paintings!
Tickets are going fast, though! There are only 50 left. Get yours here!!
At $45 dollars a piece, you not only support a good cause, you get a chance to bid on a range of auction items such as jewelry, purses, gift certificates, and more.

“Music for Bikes” – See the flyer for fundraiser – at North St Church, Halifax. This event was on April 1st.
Two 18×28″ panels.
This show featured live musical numbers on ukuleles, guitars, violin, drums, singing, as well as Vagina Monologue recitation to interpretive dance. Some of these musicians were familiar to me from painting this. There was also a fair amount of hula hooping, dancing, mingling, and so on. This event was to raise funds for two women to bicycle halfway across the country. Hey, everyone’s gotta have a dream, right? This piece has some similarities to the last one I did a year ago in North Street Church for “The Spot” fund raiser.
As a side note, I think I’ve come a long way in even just the last year of live painting in terms of how much detail works itself into the piece over the course of the evening. (What lies ahead in future live painted works if I keep this pace up?) I’m more comfortable painting bigger canvases than I was a year ago.
I’m getting behind in posting events I have painted, so I best catch up.

I will be live painting the Music for Bikes fundraiser on April 1st.
This will be the second event I’ve painted in North St Church. [The last time was nearly a year ago for "The Spot" fundraiser. Not sure what angle I will paint from this time, but suggestions welcome.]

My next live painting show will be tomorrow evening – or later on today if you want to get technical. I will paint while people dine at the Marriott (near the Halifax Casino). There are a few tickets left if anyone is sitting on the fence about attending. It should be fun.
This is the long-awaited Fancy Gay Dress Party gala event in support of Halifax Pride.
I’m so stoked about painting this event!
It should be a lot of fun and I hope to capture people dressed in their finest.
It was mentioned in the Chronicle Herald today. (Or yesterday if you want to get technical.)

I’m pleased to announce that I will be live painting Light After Dark at The Company House on February 4th. As usual, I will paint the event itself, and the completed work will be auctioned off to benefit the Avalon Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This is your chance to support a good cause and possibly get yourself an original live painted Sharon Hodgson.
Show starts at 7, and the comedy portion of the show starts at 8. (I am stoked about that! I have been wanting to live paint comedy for a while now…) Tickets are $35.
Below are live paintings I have done in The Company House in the last few months, to give you an idea of what to expect from me stylistically when I live paint this show. [More on these works here]

The red walls in The Company House are fun to paint.
Hope to see you at Light After Dark on Feb 4th, 7pm at the Company House, benefit for the Avalon Centre. If you see me, say hi!
Afro Musica – Last Waltz – Halifax Jazz Festival
no comments“Last Waltz of the Halifax Jazz Festival” – Live painting in 3.5 hrs of the final show of the TD Halifax Jazz Festival 2010. 30×40″ canvas.
This work will be auctioned off at a gala event supporting Jazz East on December 9, 2010 of this year. (More details will be posted closer to the time.)
This band could definitely be described as Cuban-inspired. The mix of horns and drums mixed it up and made the time and paint fly by. This was another band that made it hard to sit still – you had to get up and dance!!
The last day of the Halifax Jazz Festival was nicknamed by crew organizing the event the “Last Waltz”, as it was the last performance at that location off Spring Garden Road. I was sorry to see the festival was over when it was all said and done.
If you like this work, 80% of the proceeds will go towards Jazz East, as with the other three I did of this event. [The other three have been sold.]Show up at the gala event in December and place your bid! Keep jazz festival events happening in Halifax!
